A focus on rights builds on a concern with equality. To invoke rights is to argue that everyone has equal entitlements to freedom from want and freedom to act and to believe that we have a duty to make this a reality. So everyone has an equal right to food, shelter, protection and care and to participation as citizens.
The promotion of human rights within education encourages the development of reciprocal and caring relationships. A consideration of human rights can also lead to questions about the treatment of non-humans and the idea of extending rights to all forms of life and even to the integrity of the planet.
